Batteries
Hazardous & Medical

What?

Household batteries of any size including battery packs from electrical items are suitable for recycling.

Where?

Batteries should be brought to a Civic Amenity Site or lots of shops and supermarkets who sell batteries will have a collection point

Check the Waste Services Locator on this site for further details.

Why?

Even small used household batteries can pose a risk if not disposed of properly.

Lithium-ion batteries and battery-powered items – such as vapes, power banks, and e-scooters – can be crushed or damaged during waste processing, leading to fires in bin trucks and waste facilities.

Batteries also contain hazardous materials that can pollute soil and water if sent to landfill, harming our environment and even human and animal health.

However, valuable materials like aluminium, copper, cobalt, lithium, mercury, cadmium, and lead can be recovered through battery recycling, supporting environmental protection and a circular economy.

General Comment / Tip

Retailers that sell batteries must provide free in-store recycling on a like-for-life basis, with collection boxes available for used batteries.

If you use batteries frequently, consider switching to rechargeable options.
