Batteries

Batteries
Hazardous & Medical

What?

Household batteries of any size including battery packs from electrical items are suitable for recycling.

Where?

Batteries should be brought to a Civic Amenity Site or lots of shops and supermarkets who sell batteries will have a collection point

Check the Waste Services Locator on this site for further details.

Why?

Even items as small as household batteries can be dangerous if they are not properly disposed of. Some batteries can contain potentially hazardous materials such as mercury, cadmium and lead, which are the main cause for environmental concern. If waste batteries are not disposed of correctly, these heavy metals may leak when the battery corrodes, and so can contribute to soil and water pollution and endanger human health. Lithium batteries, and items containing lithium batteries such as vapes, are a particular hazard if disposed of in household bins. If damaged during the collection and sorting process, these items can sometimes cause fires in waste trucks and waste treatment facilities.

General Comment / Tip

Most supermarkets will have battery boxes where you can leave your used batteries for free.

If you use a lot of batteries why not try using rechargeable ones instead.
